Xana Miguelez, MD is an Obstetrician and Gynecologic Surgeon practicing at Elmhurst Hospital within the Mount Sinai Hospital network in New York City. In addition, Dr. Miguelez earned a masters degree in International Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where she specialized in Reproductive and Sexual Health Research. Dr. Miguelez is the driving force behind “A Stitch in Time.”
A myriad of experiences motivated Dr. Miguelez to form this organization. She treats a diverse population at Mt. Sinai, including immigrants from Latin America, India, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia, and is sensitive to the health care needs of women and their families in the developing world. She also had the chance to travel to Haiti two weeks after the earthquake in 2010 and witnessed the devastation and immense need as well as the difficulties involved in acute emergency aid coordination.
Dr. Miguelez also collaborated with Family Care International, a highly respected NGO that promotes global health initiatives for women. Through that experience, she noted the urgent need for basic gynecological care, and in particular the lack of availability of routine gynecological surgeries. Dr Miguelez knew that she had the right combination of skills and connections to deliver treatment to women in need around the world, and so earned the degree in public health to help put her ideas into practice.
Dr. Miguelez was raised between Spain and the United States. She went to Miguel Hernandez University Medical School in her hometown of Alicante, Spain, where she is the youngest graduate on record. She specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.
